This Great Game as I read history has its patrician or noblesse-oblige (ancient Roman ruling class/ just look how kindly & beneficent your government is) origins in the imperial tactic to placate opposition and suppress dissent by “bearing gifts,” or advancing public funds to indigenous populations (or “Groups!”)
It is all about the present-day minimising, trivialising, deflecting and actually NONSENSISING neoliberal slogans of #adaptation & #resilience – called Capacity Building in the disastrous Harvard MPA days of 20 -25 years ago and shamelessly, even unself-consciously(!), named Retail Politics by Australian federal MP and former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce.^
It is of course “greenwashing,” but NOTHING like as innocuous-sounding as virtually playing with “lighted dynamite 🧨 🧨 sticks.”
